Thorium Energy: The Future of Sustainable Energy

According to the worriers, the world has been facing an energy crisis, and the need for a new, sustainable energy source has become more pressing than ever. They say “Fossil fuels, which have been the backbone of our energy needs for centuries, are causing environmental damage, social and political instability, and financial concerns.” Fortunately, the discovery of the fission of heavy elements known as actinides has paved the way for a new energy source that could largely replace fossil fuels forever.

Thorium is a unique fuel that caught the attention of Kirk Sorensen, a grad student in nuclear engineering at the time of recording. Thorium can be used to produce uranium-233, which can be used as fissile fuel to generate energy. What makes thorium special is that once we start a thorium reactor, we can keep it going indefinitely just by adding thorium.

Compared to other nuclear approaches, thorium reactors can be much more efficient in their nuclear strategy. Thermal spectrum slow neutrons can start a thorium reactor with a lot less fuel for a given power rating than a fast reactor with neutrons. This means that thorium reactors can be started with a lot less fuel, making them a more preferable energy source.

Despite the potential of thorium as a fuel source, its development was hindered by its initial association with nuclear weapons. But Sorensen argues that we need to explore new nuclear approaches that can replace coal and other fossil fuels, and we can make this happen by investing in the research and development of the liquid fluoride thorium reactor. At the end of this effort, we will have essentially eliminated the issue of spent nuclear fuel as a concern, and we will be capable of replacing the existing chemical fuel based electrical generation infrastructure. We will have cleaner air, cleaner water, keep hundreds of billions of dollars in our country every year because we'll be energy independent, and we will have solved the “climate crisis” permanently.

Thorium energy is the future of sustainable energy. We have the technology, we have the resources, and we have the wisdom to make it happen. By investing in thorium energy, we can create a brighter, cleaner future for ourselves and for generations to come.
